402 Ground suite with balcony MELISSES

Jewellery, part of a necklace, a work of Minoan jewelry, of the goldsmithing of the Bronze Age of Crete. It dates back to the Palaeopalatial Minoan period. 1800 - 1700 BC The first publication of the jewel was by Pierre Demargne. It is a beautiful, hanging piece of jewelry, with the two crystal bees as the main element.

Above the insects' heads, their antennae create a golden wire cage, within which a golden ball moves freely. On this is attached a second ball with a horizontal perforation - passage of chain or thread for suspension. Three round tablets hang from the wings and the end of the insect's abdomen.

According to the interpretation of the jewel the insects are bees, holding a honeycomb between their legs. All the advanced technologies of the time were used for its construction. All jewelry making techniques were also used. The coccidiosis, the pressed technique and the incised, as well as the plates. The jewel was found in the "Chrysolakkos" area, which extends north of the excavated palace complex of Malia, the third largest Minoan palace settlement after Knossos and Phaistos. It was the necropolis of the Minoan city that had developed around the palace complex and was completely destroyed in 1450 BC.
